Mahashivaratri, the night of Lord Shiva

The Mahashivaratri, 'The night of lord Shiva' has been observed on 13th day of new moon in Falgun month every year all over the world especially in South East Asia. Though there are so many legends why we celebrate this night, some of them are 'the day when Lord Shiva created by himself', 'the day  Devi Parbati did Pooja of Lord Shiva for the benefits of mankind', ' worshiping Lord Shiva on this night by a hunter unknowingly with Bel leaves and dewdrops'. The hunter was blessed by Lord Shiva that day. Whatever could be the reason behind celebrating the Mahashivaratri, the devotees worship Lord Shiva with great reverence in this night. Every year during Maha Shivaratri, it's believed that Lord Shiva incarnates everywhere in the form of the Shiva Lingam, his sacred symbol. Shiva Lingam is the symbol of the creative power of the universe that denotes that God does not have any definite form (Nirakar Parmatma).

The divine place for Shiva is Shleshmantak Ban (jungle having Lapsi trees) locale that is situated on the bank of Bagmati River in Kathmandu. On this Mahashivaratri, devotees come to this Pashupat place, the sacred place of Pashupatinath (another name of Lord Shiva) from all parts of country and from many parts of India as well. Hundreds of thousand people pay homage to Lord Shiva here in this day. This year, it's been estimated that eight hundred thousand will visit this sacred temple of Pashupatinath.

The Lord Shiva (pure forever) is the simplest one with higher thinking. He is the greatest Tapasvi( one who meditates) than anyone else who can bear the coldest environment of Mount Kailash.  It's been mentioned that Lord Shiva takes Marijuana  and I think it's for great cause to serve the living beings and non living ones. The Marijuana helps him to deeply meditate in subconscious mind without any distraction in cold environment of Mount Kailash but we so called devotee of Shiva take this for the sake of entertainment.
He is been known through 1008 names in Shiva Purana and some of them are Mahadev (great lord), Maheshor (supreme lord), Shankar(giver of joy), Rudra(terrible), Nilkanth(blue neck), Bholenath(kind hearted), Pashupatinath(lord of all living beings), Jatadhara(having matted long hair), Bhairavnath(terror), Jagadish (master of universe), Digambar( having sky as cloth), Gangadhar( lord of River Ganga), Kailashnath(master of mount Kailash), , Nataraj(king of dancing art), Shambhu (abode of joy), Omkar(creator of OM) etc.

Whatever names he is known by, He is the symbol of simple living with high thinking. He is the example of how great people can have the simple life keeping their great identity within them.

    1. Uttam,
Shleshmantak Ban DOES NOT MEAN jungle having Litchi tree. This means jungle with LAPSI. Lapsi and Litchi are different fruits.
